Alice Holt – Saturday 5th September
Last Saturday saw a great turnout from Haslemere Border AC at the Alice Holt 10km, 5km and kids races, with strong results across every single event. A big thanks to Farnham Runners for hosting such a well marshalled and fun day.
The Ladies Team – Winners!
The club was represented in the ladies race by Alex Croucher, Michelle Webb, Sofia Shearring, Donna Reid, Issy Peters, Jules Dellar and Sandy McDougall. Thanks to excellent runs from the whole group, the team romped home in a magnificent first place, beating strong competition from the host club and local rivals Farnham. With Donna, Issy and Alex not too far behind, Sofia was second female overall, a brilliant result that will hopefully build confidence for the future! Unfortunately a timing chip error meant the trophy/prize wasn’t given out and the time on the website is wrong....never mind, we know how well you did. Well done to Jules and Michelle for beating those scoring runners from other teams to help get the first four HBAC runners (Sofia, Donna, Issy and Alex taking trophies) over the line in first place.
The Men’s Team – Nearly Winners!
The men’s team consisted of John Dickinson, Tom Millns, Colin Butfield, Luke Shearring, Cairon Pearson and Andy Webb. Coming second in the team event overall to Farnham, things may have been different had the chip timing for Colin and Cairon not been totally messed up. It doesn’t matter though, we were happy with the event, our performances and the effort everyone put in. Luke Shearring won the individual event overall in a time not far off his flat 10km pb (meaning it is time to try a flat 10km...). Colin ran a strong top ten finish in around 38 minutes, Andy Webb somehow turned his Nordic walking into race speed on the day and Tom Millns who is preparing for the Great North run had a decent race that included an excellent sprint finish (which he of course won). Cairon and John also ran well and are in good shape to build for the winter XC series.
Lawrence Hollom came second overall for his first ever podium finish – well done! We have all been watching Lawrence get faster and stronger and have high hopes for continued success and speedy performances into the future.
Sandy McDougal had to sensibly pull out of the 10km halfway with a reoccurrence of a niggling injury. Despite this injury she actually came home first lady overall in the 5km, and although it isn’t an official result (due to her being registered on the 10km), it is an excellent performance and further demonstrates the strength in the club.
The Support Crew
As Steve King is unfortunately injured he took the opportunity to become official club photographer for the day. Possibly because he is injured, Steve chose to get his own back on us by choosing the top of the nastiest hill in the race to take our pictures, resulting in some rather pained, grisly and slow looking running shots! Thanks Steve.
Paul Fleming was there to support the whole team and was a welcome face at the finish line. It makes a big difference to have such support.
Janice Worsfold was an amazing head cheerleader, not only babysitting with Julia, but also whipping the Croucher, Dellar and Shearring children into shape as a quality little cheer squad.
Julia Tucker was not only looking after children (inc providing ice creams and entertainment), supporting and encouraging HBAC club runners, but was also required to help firmly (!) clarify the results when things went somewhat awry at the prize giving....
A great team day out
