Alice Holt Races

Alice Holt – Saturday 5th September

Last Saturday saw a great turnout from Haslemere Border AC at the Alice Holt 10km, 5km and kids races, with strong results across every single event. A big thanks to Farnham Runners for hosting such a well marshalled and fun day.

The Ladies Team – Winners!

The club was represented in the ladies race by Alex Croucher, Michelle Webb, Sofia Shearring, Donna Reid, Issy Peters, Jules Dellar and Sandy McDougall. Thanks to excellent runs from the whole group, the team romped home in a magnificent first place, beating strong competition from the host club and local rivals Farnham. With Donna, Issy and Alex not too far behind, Sofia was second female overall, a brilliant result that will hopefully build confidence for the future! Unfortunately a timing chip error meant the trophy/prize wasn’t given out and the time on the website is wrong....never mind, we know how well you did. Well done to Jules and Michelle for beating those scoring runners from other teams to help get the first four HBAC runners (Sofia, Donna, Issy and Alex taking trophies) over the line in first place.

The Men’s Team – Nearly Winners!

The men’s team consisted of John Dickinson, Tom Millns, Colin Butfield, Luke Shearring, Cairon Pearson and Andy Webb. Coming second in the team event overall to Farnham, things may have been different had the chip timing for Colin and Cairon not been totally messed up. It doesn’t matter though, we were happy with the event, our performances and the effort everyone put in. Luke Shearring won the individual event overall in a time not far off his flat 10km pb (meaning it is time to try a flat 10km...). Colin ran a strong top ten finish in around 38 minutes, Andy Webb somehow turned his Nordic walking into race speed on the day and Tom Millns who is preparing for the Great North run had a decent race that included an excellent sprint finish (which he of course won). Cairon and John also ran well and are in good shape to build for the winter XC series.

The 5km

Lawrence Hollom came second overall for his first ever podium finish – well done! We have all been watching Lawrence get faster and stronger and have high hopes for continued success and speedy performances into the future.

Sandy McDougal had to sensibly pull out of the 10km halfway with a reoccurrence of a niggling injury. Despite this injury she actually came home first lady overall in the 5km, and although it isn’t an official result (due to her being registered on the 10km), it is an excellent performance and further demonstrates the strength in the club.

The Support Crew

As Steve King is unfortunately injured he took the opportunity to become official club photographer for the day. Possibly because he is injured, Steve chose to get his own back on us by choosing the top of the nastiest hill in the race to take our pictures, resulting in some rather pained, grisly and slow looking running shots! Thanks Steve.

Paul Fleming was there to support the whole team and was a welcome face at the finish line. It makes a big difference to have such support.

Janice Worsfold was an amazing head cheerleader, not only babysitting with Julia, but also whipping the Croucher, Dellar and Shearring children into shape as a quality little cheer squad.

Julia Tucker was not only looking after children (inc providing ice creams and entertainment), supporting and encouraging HBAC club runners, but was also required to help firmly (!) clarify the results when things went somewhat awry at the prize giving....

A great team day out

Alice Holt Date! Saturday 5th, not Sunday 6th…….

The update below originally had a wrong date for Alice Holt. It is on Saturday 5th not Sunday 6th , sorry

Also, due to the race we will not be running the normal Saturday Hills Punchbowl session on that morning - even more reason to come along and have a nice little run out in HBAC colours at Alice Holt! (especially as there are kids races and a 5km at the same time as well)

Hi everyone

Just a reminder about the upcoming races we listed for us to really have a go at as a club. Many of the races below sell out, so now is the time to book your place. The good news is that a lot of them are priced around £12-14 so don’t break the bank

First of all it would be fantastic to get as many HBAC club vests to these events as possible, especially but not only the local ones. Having teammates there to cheer you on or to share a nervous car ride (due to race nerves not Dave B’s driving) can make such a positive difference before, during and after the race

Secondly, it would be amazing for us to win or place highly in a few of these. We have ever growing strength in depth as demonstrated by the ladies team absolutely smashing the Harting 10m race a few weeks ago. You entering the event could make all the difference!

  • September 5th  Alice Holt                                              10km
  • September 13th Pilgrim Half                                            13m
  • September 27th Barnes Green Half                              13m
  • October 4th Punchbowl                                                    10km
  • October 25th Fleet (Grand Prix)                                   10km
  • October 25th Great South (Grand Prix)                        10m
  • November 1st Lordshill (Grand Prix)                            10m
  • November 15th Gosport Half (Grand Prix)                    13m

Finally, I had some great responses about your running objectives and race plans - thanks. If you didn’t reply but still fancy some extra support or encouragement here is a gentle reminder to get in touch.... luke.shearring@pgl.co.uk

Have a good week all, cheers

Road Race update

Hi all

A few things for you to have a look at and think about below

Race list – a way of planning events and hopefully gaining some mutual club support

This list is principally aimed pre Grand Prix but will have a bit of crossover from Fleet Half marathon and Great South Run (25th October) onwards as per last year.

Suggested races listed below. Please come back to me (luke.shearring@pgl.co.uk ) in the next couple of weeks to add races to this list if you think they would be good for the wider club members to aim for (any type of event is fine to be added).

  • July 26th Elmbridge                                                          10km
  • August 2nd Harting trail race                                         10m
  • September 6th Alice Holt                                                 10km
  • September 13th Pilgrim Half                                          13.1m
  • September 27th Barnes Green Half                             13.1m
  • October 4th Punchbowl                                                    10km
  • October 25th Fleet (Grand Prix)                                   10km
  • October 25th Great South (Grand Prix)                     10m
  • November 1st Lordshill (Grand Prix)                         10m
  • November 15th Gosport Half (Grand Prix)             13.1m

On top of the above, the odd parkrun or 5km would be a welcome addition to anyone’s plans

  1. You, your events and goals – gaining some interest, support and recognition for your efforts (pre and post event)!

On top of the club race list, I would like to hear about the events you are doing, from charity fun runs to ultra marathons. I don’t often use Facebook so am unlikely to see or hear about your fantastic challenges and achievements there. My goal is to create a list of events that people are doing in order to help ensure we all get both encouragement and support leading up, and then congratulations (or commiserations) post event. This support, interest and acknowledgment could be 1:1 with the coaching team or me, or could be through recognition and support from the whole club at things like training – it is up to you

As part of this, I would love to know what your goal within the event you are doing is. Your goals could be simple or complicated, anything from

  • simply getting around and having fun
  • post injury testing
  • gaining a pb
  • raising money for charity
  • helping a friend complete their goal
  • to beating your pal from work (or the club!)
  • etc

All of these goals are equally valid, important and are valued by the club.

If you would rather not let me know what you are doing and planning, then that is of course fine. Many people like to keep their true goals private which is absolutely fine.

 3.   What else would you like?

Please let me know what other ideas or requests you have on top of this. Is there anything you would like me to do as part of the role of Road Captain?

  1. Summary – what have I asked you for!?

  • Any additions for the club race list – what events should we target as a club?
  • Your booked in events, plans and goals (if you want to share them)
  • Feedback on anything you would like from the role

Cheers

Luke (old Luke)

HBAC Sports Day – Sunday 12th July

HBAC Sports Day – Sunday 12th July

Due to popular demand we are running a club sports day on Sunday 12th July, from 2.30pm at   Woolmer Hill.

All welcome (even if you can’t be bothered to run on the day!)

Events and Races are designed to be fun and inclusive for people of all ages and abilities. This is a great opportunity to come along with your family, friends (inc non running ones if you want) and have a really fun and relaxed afternoon.

Free food and a drink!

The club have kindly agreed to provide some food and a drink for free. So we are running a BBQ (did we mention with free food and a beer/soft drink!) from 4pm onwards. You may want to bring your own drinks and picnic as a top up.......

This means you can simply come along, have a bite to eat and a cold drink and cheer your friends or family on without needing to take part (although it will of course be more fun if you do).

Will it cost me anything?

We will be charging each person £1 to be part of the afternoon, great value even if you are bringing the family.... This money will help pay for fun little prizes as well as topping up the food and drink fund. Just bring your cash with you on the day or feel free to hand it over beforehand.

 First Races 3pm

A selection of team based running relay events. Some of the races have a twist which means if you’ve ever wanted to beat Jon Fairs or Katy Ward in a race, this is your big chance! There will be chances for everyone to win at something.

On the day we will have a timetable of these events, meaning you can sit some out if you want to take it easy for a bit, or get in the zone ready for the event you really want to win....We also have loads of other events and games up our sleeves depending on numbers and the willingness of participants on the day.

Let us know if you are coming to this great event

Please reply to the email link letting us know if you are able to make it, and if so who will be coming with you. It would also be helpful if you were able say if you are not able to come this time.

Hope to see you all there!
